The Criminal Background Check is often misunderstood by consumers. Many believe that it is all accessible through online databases but this is far from the truth. Very few counties post their records online, so strictly using online sources is not an effective way to conduct a criminal background check. Along with getting incomplete information, you often get outdated information with internet searches. We go to the courts individually and search their records which allows us to report real time data that is accurate and reliable at the same time. We can search any of the over 3,200 counties nationwide that the customer requests. The criminal record search will report all convictions on file for a history of 7 years and in some circumstances 10 years. In order to remain compliant with applicable Federal laws, Double Check Investigations does not provide information on arrests that do NOT result in a conviction.

The Social Security Trace is a report from the credit bureaus that gives an address history on the applicant. It verifies that the applicant is in fact who they say they are by matching the name and social security number. This is the first step in screening an applicant because it will verify who they are and possibly uncover fraud.  

The Credit Report shows the applicant’s credit history and public data relating to credit issues such as bankruptcies and liens. The Credit Report may also contain past employers and addresses. This report should be used when determining whether an employee is fit to handle cash or other financials. It is also a good gauge of responsibility and trust. It should also be used when extending a line of credit to an applicant such as in the case of a property owner.

The Credit Report is a very sensitive document and is strictly governed by the Federal Government. Double Check Investigations follows all applicable laws and regulations when dealing with Credit Reports. Therefore, all requests must be accompanied by the proper release form and will only be given for employment or tenant purposes. We will not furnish Credit Reports for personal use in any circumstances.

The Motor Vehicle Report (MVR) is sometimes referred to as an applicant’s “driving record.” Double Check Investigations receives its MVRs from the Department of Public Safety (DPS) and it includes a 3 year history report in most states. The report includes license status, type of license, and violations connected with the license that remained on the applicants file.

We strongly suggest the MVR for any applicant who will be driving a vehicle of any kind, personal or company, as a part of the job requirement in order to reduce liability on the part of the employer. We also suggest that this be on ongoing process throughout employment in order to ensure that the driver is remaining compliant with applicable state laws.

Double Check Investigations takes sex crimes very seriously which is why we provide our Sex Offender Search at a very low rate. Double Check does this because we feel that it should never be skipped over for any reason during a background check. The search is a nationwide search of all 50 states and it gives a report on registered sex offenders including address, offense, and other pertinent information on the offender.

The Statewide Criminal Search is often misinterpreted. There is no such thing as an accurate statewide search because all of the records are held at the county level. Some of the counties report to the state and those are the only records that will be found in a statewide search. For example, there are 254 counties in Texas and only about 40 report to the state. On top of that, there is a significant time delay from when the records are in the county system until the time they reach the state level. Therefore, Double Check does not recommend this service alone as a background screening device. It is used by our investigators along with the county research in order to cover a wider area than the individual counties searched.
